Technology and Language Teaching

In the realm of modern education, technology has emerged as a powerful tool that aids the learning process in the digital era and has become a global trend (Zhang & Yu, 2021). Our lives are now enveloped by technology, especially with the rise of the digital age. The new generation, born into this era, is often highly skilled in utilizing and engaging with social media, earning them the label of "multi-tasking digital natives" due to their ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously (Bromley, 2010). Consequently, it has become a need for modern society to incorporate technology into education; otherwise, we risk being left behind. As the world continues to grow more interconnected, technology enables us to access and benefit from advanced knowledge, science, and information, thus serving as a valuable medium for enhancing teaching and learning practices (Zhao, 2015).

Presently, technology has become an integral component of the learning process, catering to the preferences and skills of these digital natives (Oblinger, 2003; Gibbons, 2007). Integrating technology in the classroom has the potential to enhance both teaching and learning, particularly in the acquisition of foreign language skills (Altun, 2015). Numerous studies have showcased the positive impacts and benefits of technology integration in language teaching and learning (Eaton, 2010; Gilakjani, 2014; Rintaningrum, 2019). By introducing technology in language education, both students and teachers have remarkable opportunities for acquiring new knowledge and gaining diverse experiences (Merzifonluoğlu & Gonulal, 2018). Technological tools facilitate maintaining English speaking abilities, particularly in settings where English is not widely used (Rintaningrum, 2016). Additionally, technology facilitates access to authentic language materials (Larsen-Freeman & Anderson, 2011), promoting language competence improvement and cooperative (Clements & Sarama, 2003), while also cultivating positive attitudes towards learning (Gordon et al., 2011).

Multimedia technology has the potential to enhance students' learning motivation and attention (Pham & Usaha, 2016; Shadiev & Huand, 2019; Tang, Sung, & Chang, 2015) and interest in foreign language learning (Elvi, 2017), thus enhancing performance in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms (Garret, 2009; Gimeno-Sanz, 2015; Tapscott, 2009). Technology provides a wealth of learning resources, encourages peer feedback, and enhances students' metacognitive and metalinguistic knowledge. It offers essential tools that facilitate cooperative learning and exciting alternatives for further language skills development through experimentation (Garret, 2009; Basset et al., 2006). Furthermore, technology aids students in understanding the rules and dynamics of both formal and informal languages (Douglas, 2009). Language learning through technology, particularly via the internet, promotes student-centered learning and motivates learners to become autonomous and active participants in the learning process (Ghanizadeh et al., 2014; Ammade et al., 2018; Huffaker, 2003).

In conclusion, the integration of technology in language teaching and learning has become increasingly important in the digital era. It offers numerous benefits and opportunities for both students and teachers. By incorporating technology, educators can enhance language acquisition, provide access to authentic materials, foster cooperative learning, and improve student motivation and engagement. Multimedia tools, in particular, facilitate interactive and immersive learning experiences. Moreover, technology empowers students to take ownership of their learning journey, promoting autonomy and active participation. As technology continues to advance, it is crucial for educators to stay abreast of new tools and strategies to optimize language learning outcomes. Embracing technology in language education opens doors to innovative and effective teaching approaches, equipping students with the skills they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world.
